Open Question: Safety in Jakarta as opposed to Singapore?

Visiting Jakarta and Singapore around June to Sept this year. Reason being a relation lives in Jakarta so staying with him and his Indonesian wife. Singapore as went to school there in the early 80s. Am taking my wife 3 year old and baby - around 9 months by then. No worries about Singapore but is Jakarta safe for my kids. What about pollution and food, water.
